Burlington has a thriving collegiate atmosphere and is a proud host to several institutions of higher learning. The University of Vermont, chartered in 1791, was the fifth established college in New England. Fletcher Allen Health Care, partnered with the UVM College of Medicine, is one of the premier medical centers in the country and is one of the state of Vermont's largest employers.
